For Robert’s birthday this year, I booked a quick weekend in the Alps about 2 hours from Basel. It is always nice to get away, even if it is just an overnight. So, with baby in tow and our backpacks we headed out. I have to say (and as I write this, I am touching our wood coffee table) Noah is a great baby to travel with. He is perfectly content to hang out in the Ergo and chill close to mom or dad. This makes life so pleasant when we are on the road, however, our little man has other issues when it comes to sleeping in foreign places. He rarely goes to bed before 9 – or 10, which is rather crazy for our 9 month old and that is usually in my arms. Once we finally get him into the crib, he seems to wake up screaming, almost out of fear of his new surrounding – nothing looks familiar and just to check that his mom and dad are still near. We are working on this!
Why is the water so blue you ask? Legend has it that the lake is a beautiful turquoise blue color due to the many tears that were shed from a girl who lost her lover. Apparently they spent many hours together at the lake and after his passing, and after losing him, she would go to the lake and cry, hence filling the water with her sorrow. Though this is quite the depressing story, there is something beautiful about loving someone so much that your sorrow can fill an entire lake. As for the geological reason the lake is so blue, we are not too sure, though we think it has something to do with the minerals in the rocks…any geologists out there?
On a happier note, as for the weekend – it was great. The hotel had a spa that was free of charge with your room rate and I have to say, it was a rather nice break. Robert and I took turns relaxing and rejuvenating while the other watched our precious little man. My highlight at the spa was taking a hot bath in a white porcelain tub, outside while I just gazed ahead at the Alps. I know, it sounds almost ridiculous and rather pompous, but believe me, this is not something I have ever done and certainly not something that I took for granted. As I sat there looking ahead, I felt nothing other than gratitude.
Overall, it was a great weekend and a total eye – candy type setting. The area is a photographers dream, with beautiful images all around. Together in our short weekend; Robert and I managed to snap almost three hundred pictures. Here are a few of our favorites.
