Our Stuff's Here!

Friday morning we thought it would be nice to just sit out on the back patio, and enjoy the excellent weather we have been having...

Fortunatly, I took the day off work because our stuff is here! We woke up early since the movers (to pick up our temporary furniture) arrived at 8:30am. It seemed like a long time to pack up a bed, couch, table and chairs, and some stuff to cook with, but by 10:30 we were out the door and on our way to the Kanton Polizei... I had to go get my driving license. After a 10 franc eye exam, several pages of documents, and a 140 franc license fee, I signed over my PA license and two great passport photos (mug shots). They said (through a translator) that it should arrive in 6 weeks. I got the impression that they did not want to speak English, or deal with those who do. We made our way home, after picking up some groceries, with enough time to spare for the movers to arrive at 14:00. The driver of our container arrived at 13:00, rang our doorbell, but when I got outside he was waving the trolly to pass...

... just bearly. I thought the mirrors would break off. Finally, I met the driver. Nice guy, but didn't speak a word of English. After all my practice for the drivers license, I was able to understand what he was asking, and tried to reply as best I could. He showed me that the one way lock on the container was still intact. He asked, "woher kommen Sie?" So, I told him we came from PA, and he said, "ahhh", took me to the front of the container, and showed me where the truck in PA kicked up dirt on the front of it; he said, "Das ist Pennsylvania, ja?" My comunication skills are improving. The movers arrived at 14:01, late by Swiss standards, but my watch was one minute early.

As you can see, there were a few boxes that shifted, but some of the first boxes out of the container were empty and used for padding. Which was good, because the empty boxes were the same size as the ones that stored my bicycles. My bikes came out after the empty boxes. The movers, like the Swiss, were highly efficient, all of our stuff was moved in by 15:00. We were still needing to unpack it all, and since the recycling progam here is so extensive, where you need to cut-up cardboard and stack it up in neat wrapped bricks, we asked the movers if they could take the boxes and wrapping with them. Good thing they said "yes". I could have opened a UPS Store with all the packaging material. This is how fast they moved us in...

Before, with our IKEA patio furniture (we picked this us with our rental car... nice!)

BOOM... it's all here...

Empty....

BLAM... Boxes are empty...
