Basel Celebrates Fasnacht

Basel Celebrates Fasnacht!
Wow...how does one explain the festivities that have been taking place in Basel for the last four days? Robert and I might have to agree on - crazy, culturally significant and unique. I do not know if there is anything comparable in the US and if there is, we sure haven't seen it. Sunday night we headed into the town of Liestal to watch the "fire show." There were about a trillion people present and then all the lights in the city go out. Picture this, pitch - blackness and then out of nowhere come groups of people holding the most beautifully hand - made lanterns. After several groups pass by, the real fun begins. Groups of people march through the town with fire (not to worry, plenty of firemen were on hand.) It was incredible... hot, smoking and exhilarating all at the same time.

A cart of wood...blazing!
Intense
Notice how close the people are to the fire. Have we lost our minds?
Wow...

Hand painted lanterns...
Marching through the city gate...Dad, this is where we had coffee.
